It varies - some are free, some you will have to cross with credit card. Normally fire up your browser in such an environment and it will tell you what the deal is (like many hotels etc)

And if you are as lucky as I am with unlimited data on my phone contract, I can use this through my laptop or iPad wherever I am, as long as I have a phone signal.

I used to connect to the net using a laptop and Oranges everyday 50 simcard through my phone. The beauty of it was Orange did not have a data transfer tarrif set up for everyday 50. So It was 50 minutes free then 1 pence a minute thereafter from 7pm till 7am. Brilliant. I sold that simcard on ebay for £150.00 - just the simcard lol.
