Since it was warm yesterday I decided it would be a good day to take out the nadirs from all my four colonies. Two of the colonies were fine, they had nice and clean, but empty, comb in the nadirs and there were almost no dead bees on the hive floors. The other two had hundreds and hundreds of dead bees on the floors, some of the nadir combs were mouldy and the place generally looked unkempt; I suspect this was becasue as the bees dies off there weren't enough left to clean up. However all the colonies are alive and I expect the poorer ones will pick up as the queen gets on with it. I have burnt the mouldy frames and when we get the next decent weather I will do a proper inspection. All the colonies are taking food and are out foraging. For bee health, it has probably been my worst winter but as I come into my sixth year I am pleased to say I have still not lost a colony over the winter.
