Possible but the stats (BBKA) suggest average colonies per beekeeper is 4 and average yield around 30lb for 2010, and similar for previous years. 120lb honey simply disappears to family and friends and doesn't really impact market forces. I have no data but I suspect honey consumption is also rocketing.

Hi,

I would to know the price which you commonly ask to commercial shops (i.e specialist delicatessenes) those buy your honey.

Please give an example price for Acacia or Thousand-flower honey selling in 1lbs jar?

Bye

With the rate at which the number of colonies is increasing in the UK I could see a possible price crash in the near future.

There is that worry but there could also be quite a bit of second hand kit around too ;)

The UK imports more honey than we can produce and is likely to increase the level of imports to meet demand(?).
Besides the likes of Rowse, there are several other companies that import, process and jar up. In fact we have one on our doorstep, it doesn't seem to effect prices around here for a local premium product. We are getting £4 to £5 per 12oz jar no probs. Clarks
They may also be the source of 25kgs buckets for sale locally and on ebay. From ebay ad "They have been used just ONCE to transport honey from South Africa to a local bottling and packing factory." ?????

They may also be another source of AFB infection, lets hope they are well sterilised.

If my yield was 30 lb per colony I would be re-queening :)
90-100 lb is average here and no OSR.

You could be right hence my ???? at the end. They are washed but at what temp? Will pose the question to the LBI.

I think the problem is a lot of people are losing swarms, and with it a big percentage of their honey crop.
Posted it before , Newbie has flat pack hive bought for Christmas , sold a nuc of carnies by someone who should know better, before he properly knew what a honeybee looked like .
Hive swarmed ! Parent hive produced a queen , progeny aggressive !
Watch this space!

Judging from the lack of response it may be that these aren't produced in the UK. In France Acacia is around €9 a kg retail and Mille fleurs around €6 a kilo retail.

and with bbka suggesting feeding 20kg? of sugar per colony at 80p per kg that's £64 plus fuel to collect!
then bottles and labels at around 78p per 1lb jar

that's £160......to give away to relatives and friends before a penny can be turned to pay for hives frames medicaments replacement bees bbka exams....

Expensive HOBBY !!!!!:smilielol5: or:smilielol5:

think I will go back to breeding Budgies!
not worthynot

At worst cost scenario if collected... or add P&P !!!

I know Im not good at maths or have I misread or missed some thing all together?

As ive said before it is around here its only £3-50 to £3-75 and thats in the shops.. Theres at least 6 people in a ten mile radius selling between £ 3-00 and £3-75 for a pound jar.. How many do you want to buy at $4-00 you can sell them at £6-00 and make £2-00

could i sell it as local honey LOL

i have sold out at £6 per lb and £4.75 for hex 12 oz

Honey is in very short supply in this area this year

Thanks Chris for your answer.

The prices you posted are quiet similar to the prices in Italy. I guess that these prices are referred to the direct selling from beekeeper to private customers and not as supplying to commercial shops.
Do you have any experience with shops in UK in matter of prices ?

Ciao

You may want to contact importer the link in my earlier post 124 and check with them direct.

I am shifting my vast stock (9 pounds in total) at the moment in 1/2 lb jars and I'm being given (not asking mind you) £5.00 a jar  - they don't know how little honey I have BTW :sifone:

ciao davide! Benvenuti in Forum senza arnie trasparente o ossalico sublimato!!!

most UK production and sales will be millefiori - except heather (erica).

as you will see on here most people charge at least £4.50 per lb (£10 per chilo)

at visiting continental markets most single flower honeys (acacia, castagne) will sell for perhaps £6 per jar (although i haven't been to one for a few years - anyone else want to update?).

Not sure what "a jar" is, however local honeys....

Sweet chestnut €5 to €6 per kilo approx £2.50 per lb

Sunflower the same as Chestnut.

OSR, again the same as above.

Acacia €9 per kilo approx £3.70 per lb

It's interesting to note that France also imports vast quantities of honey BUT what is usually overlooked when quoting that fact is that France also exports vast quantities of honey.

I only sell in the UK via someone that collects from me in France and they are happy to pay my retail price, no surprises there.

Honey is one of the few food products that is cheaper and better in France than in the UK, mostly it's the other way round.
