Good morning
At the weekend I was lucky enough to buy an electric extractor to replace my hand powered one. Its a Taylors 10 frame radial.
I got it for a good price I believe as it has a small problem.
The speed controller doesnt work, burnt out by all accounts. There are no identifying marks on it and inside they beige box on the picture is just a small board with a capacitor, resistor and potentiometer thingy. I am not that good with electrics but basically the mains wire goes into this box, then a wire links the box to the motor. The motor runs on mains.
As I understand it to operate it you switch the plug on, the motor then turns and you adjust the speed acordingly.
Can anybody help me, anyone got one of these, had a similar problem or know what I need to order to replace it.
Any help much appreciated or its back to the wife working on her 'bingo wings'.
Thank you
Pete D

I Googled and only found one site where you might be able to get some info from somebody else with a problem on an E H Taylor extractor. It is at http://www.*************/members/forum.php?t=5129. The only other one I turned up was at http://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/an-e-h-taylor-ltd-honey-extractor-1-c-6j2w4kbne1 where one is available at auction. I don't think either link will help you directly but worth a try perhaps as it may lead you elsewhere. the asterisks in the first one should be substituted with bbka - org- uk (alter to a dot and no spaces) and you will probably need to register on the bbka forum to get further.

Thank you for that Afermo, I had already googled and found the BBKA mention but not really anything forthcoming.
Just spoke to an engineer at work who wants me to give him the details off the motor and reckons he can then work out what speed control board I want, about 15 - 20 quid from Maplin's he thinks. Maybe a couple of jars of honey and I can get him to wire it up ! here's hoping.
Would still like to hear from anyone who has one of these though.

Hi Pete D
I have a similar extractor from Taylors, with what looks like the same motor. My adjuster went a few years ago, and for what its worth I replaced mine with a variable light switch thingy. It worked fine for a couple of years until the motor burnt out. It was very old when I pickedd it up at a reasonable price and did me ok for the first few years of beekeeping.
I tried the "repair route", but drew a blank. So, getting new at the Spring convention. Good luck with your quest, but as I said, you could stick a dip switch on.

Aha, thank you Buzz, do you mean a dimmer switch, just like the one in your bedroom for soft lighting.....!
I had considered that but wasnt sure it would work, but hey they are fairly cheap and I could mount it on the wall next to the extractor, if it doesnt work I could use it on my garage lights....!
Cheers

Do a bit of Googling first before trying a dimmer switch. There is a lot of contradictory advice but it does seem as if you would need a "dimmer" designed for an electric motor - an inductive dimmer. If you have a local trade electrical supplier it would be worth making enquiries with them.

Give Thornes a ring. I have a mate who had problems with a motor of a similar age and they were able to give exact details on how to sort it out over the phone (even though they hadn't manufactured it). I got the impression they'd managed to fix motors from most suppliers so had a good knowledge and were happy to help.

Thornes took over EH taylor of Welwyn in 1984 so it is over 30 years old

You have a Parvalux motor on that setup ( I have one for repair of drum at the moment)Parvalux are still about and the last time I spoke to them very helpful www.parvalux.co.uk/

Thank you all for the help and guidance. I have some stuff to go on there and will try to get it sorted this week rather than wait till I need it.
With regards to my old extractor its the 4 frame £230 quid job from Wragby, white plastic hand powered one. Not sure if I will be selling it just yet but if I do Mikemel I will pm you to see if you are interested.
Many thanks

Hi Pete D sounds like you have enough info to be going on with. However, if you come unstuck in the future, I have the under-slung version of your extractor. I have a variable switch gear from an old kenwood mixer which is my backup should the original switch go down. Just a thought for the future.
