Just going through my frames. Noticed the foundation on lots of the frames I put in the freezer has cracked from top to bottom. You can see it if you hold the frame up to the light. Anyone else get this problem? Obviously the contraction when they are really cold. Bad wax moth over this winter. May try the ash method!

+ wax gets very brittle when at low temps.

Reminds me, I have boxes of foundation in my shed, haven't looked at since 2014!:sos:

Yes, I've had that issue, but if you treat the wax gently til you put it on the hives, the bees will do the necessary repairs.

I didn't store it in the freezer, I popped it in for 48 hours to kill any wax moth, fat lot of good that did though!

Well there is aye a first and that is a first.

Can't say I have ever had wax moth bothering foundation.

I was thinking the same, I have deep and shallow frames of foundation made up and stored in empty boxes in the shed.

Sorry, I have not explained the situation properly. Let me start again, I have frames of drawn comb which i put through the freezer before storing for the winter to kill any wax moth grubs etc. I checked them today in preparation for spring and held them up to the light. I could see that the foundation between the comb had split from top to bottom presumably from the freezing I did.
I have no wax moth in only foundation and did not store them in the freezer
Lesson learnt, be more specific on the forum!
Sorry folks
E :)

Had a couple of frames of foundation munched by wax moth last season while in the hive - not so bad it needed chucking (passed it through the freezer and back into service).

I made foundation which had a few cracks in it and the bees drew it out seamlessly
