Perhaps if he'd just fired up the mini digger and made a hole anywhere he'd have found a pipe.
seeing as he said they were all over the place - it would probably more of an impressive task not to find one

When tested impartially, divining is no more successful than chance.

Diviners believe you can use the method to locate all kinds of things. You just need to think of the thing you're after while holding the coat hangers or sticks.

It likely uses the Ideomotor phenomenon - unconscious muscular action - sensory cues, expectancy effects, and probability.

Which makes you wonder why there isn't one on every high street to make finding your lost or stolen car keys/pets/children/other items far more straightforward.

Damn! Imagine how much crime could be cleared up if these people put their skills to such a use instead of mucking about playing at finding water. Clearly they're all just antisocial gits.

If that James Randi video is the one I think it is, there's one test I'd like to have seen him do that I don't recall being done.

They get the dowsers to confirm that they can find water passing through one of the pipes in the test by telling them which one it is, and they all "find" it. What I would then have done is had them repeat the test telling them that the water was going through a different pipe this time, but not actually turning the water on at all. It would have been interesting to see if they "found" water that wasn't there.

You can all scoff and protest .... you don't even believe it when you see it working. I know it works so you can all get on and deride it as much as you want. I'm not a believer in finding lost jewellery or keys or using the rods to search for evidence of cancer ... but ... it works for some things.

Randi's tests were always designed and pre-agreed in partnership with the participants. Perhaps he wasn't allowed to be dishonest.

Ah, yes, of course. He used to get them to agree that it was a fair test before they even started. I'd have been more deceitful :D

I've known a couple of people who swear by it. The interesting one was a deeply cynical engineer, ultra rationalist, who found it worked for him when he decided to prove it was nonsense.

Does anyone remember the 1980s TV series about Donovan Wilkins, diviner? An interesting enough watch which is still accessible on YouTube.

I used to work for a builder who'd wonder around with a pair of welding rods to find old drains, it definitely worked for him.
I tried and failed😪

All I know is it works for me when looking for buried cables and pipes. I don't know how, I don't know why and it might miss some but I have had success in areas I've never visited before. (Shrug)

I don't believe in such things or at least I didn't until I had acupuncture on the NHS for chronic back pain. It got rid of the pain for six days welcome relief. I was allowed three sessions only but those 18 days of no pain were a blessing. I still don't believe in it but......

I've come to realise and respect the very real power of placebo.
