I was asked by a local school teacher if I could identify this but I am unable to do so, any ideas.

It is a clearwing moth. It is most likely Sesia apiformis, but of course I could be wrong. Without an actual specimen to examine, it is difficult to identify with certainty from a photograph.

Hi, she had just laid eggs (well they looked like eggs) in small clusters on the bark of the tree.....

The pic was text.to me from.the.teacher.
