I've just received an email from our association secretary containing an appeal for funds from an organisation called bees for development.
After the stories about other charitable appeals I'm not sure if I know how pukka this one is. It might be related to the works that JBM did in Africa but can anyone clarify this point?

Bees for Development is an excellent, long-established charity doing fine work. See http://www.beesfordevelopment.org/ I called in on one of their projects in Ethiopia two years ago, while on a backpacking holiday, and I was very impressed with the work being done. We (Conwy BKA) have supported them with donations for many years, mainly from collections at the annual Conwy Honey Fair. Highly recommended.

You've got two good bee charities working in Africa - bees for development and bees abroad, personally I prefer BA - they don't have any fancy offices or paid staff but spend all their money on the projects but I'm comfortable with either.
I worked direct for Welsh government when I was out there but am currently looking at something with BA

Thanks JBM exactly what I needed to hear. Sad that the antics of other charity fundraisers has created a sense of suspicion.

Mine goes back to blue peter , remember the rags for tractors, tractors ended up on the quay side rotting away because of the African politics at the time

I also received some blurb asking for publicity and fund raising to be published in our association magazine and have had the same niggling concerns. Thank you for your information. Is there perhaps a little article to be had from your experiences that we could print in the magazine (Devon BKA...)?

Now you mention it, I do remember the Blue Peter campaign. I didn't know about the outcome though. How terribly sad.

Ditto - though Peterbees response above has lifted my concerns somewhat.

Actually, it's very encouraging to note that this issue has been raised intermittently since 2016. I'll go ahead and print their info. Thanks all, and sorry for resurrecting an old thread.
