I bloody love Christmas but house doesn’t get decorated until December and I can’t stand the endless commercialism and consumerism. Can we go back to celebrating the pagan winter festival please?

I would love to do this. The turning of the seasons means far more to me than all the drivel we have today. Mostly I feel as though I'm out on a limb in that regard though.

Light the chapel fire day before Christmas eve, regular trips up the mountain to try and keep it in until Christmas morning (the hearth is around 200 years old) last check around 2300 Christmas eve, back up there at 0500 to open up, load the fire up to blast furnace level then light the candles (no leccie either) people start arriving around 0600, I start the service at 0630.
Then back for a chillout and endure the rest of the nonsense, I suppose the best part of which is meeting Father in Law for a pint in the club then dragging him back to theirs for Christmas dinner at 1300.

First large Christmas event done this weekend, I now have a week to jar loads of honey and make more candles and gift sets before the next one. I don't do many been talked into doing 3 large events this year.
Bank balance is happy but I now have a busy week trying to replace the honey I sold. I have several single apiary honeys so I can't do it all with the jarring machine, back to hand jarring.
Need more jars as I only have 500 on stock.
Saturday up at 5:30, had to carry all the stock up 2 flights of stairs, back home at 5pm had to jar and label honey to replace stock got to bed at 11:30. Sunday up at 7 back at 5:30 after packing up and carrying everything back down 2 flights of stairs, bloody knackered was asleep by 9pm.

Well done Nige!
I had just 4 hours of it on Saturday and my feet and back were playing up by the time I got to bed! You have my sympathy 😀

No you're damn well not!!

Looks like it's time to start a "Bring back Saturnalia" campaign :D In fact it seems doubly suitable for beekeepers because, according to Wikipedia at least, gifts were:

often the pottery or wax figurines called sigillaria made specially for the day, candles, or "gag gifts"

Couple of points about Christmas. First you can tell it's Christmas because the Easter eggs are in the shops. Secondly - why have it at this time of the year when the shops are packed. Lastly commercialism, forced bonhomie but the best bit of all is when it's over.

I like the Christmas dinner and decorating the tree but it's all gone a bit mad. Someone needs to say stop to all the stress parents are under by puting a limit on how much is spent on presents. But the worst thing is we have an economy built on commercialism so its never going to happen ....... oops sorry this is a bee forum isn't it - I'll shut up. Merry Christmas all and happy bees.

I hate it absolutely.
Waste of time off if youre not allowed to get on with jobs that could be done instead
Grandchildren presents for 20 mins tolerable. After that Im just gagging to go back to work(where the decs went up last week)
Maybe when retirement arrives I could review it but until then bloody humbug
Bah Humbug! 🙄

I hate this timeof year! That's Extraction then Halloween, then bonfire fortnight, then Christmas then Happy New Year. Not long now though; things improve in January when I start preparing for the next beekeeping and allotment year

I agree Dani, it’s just I don’t want to waste my days on overt commercialism 😀

Yes. I try to limit that to a week in the whole year.
I’ve made a few hampers for nurses at a couple of hospitals and done one Christmas Fayre.
In my neck of the woods folk haven’t got much money. I’m taking 20 jars of honey to the local food bank.

I like the food bank idea. I'm going to see if I can do it with my local food bank.

My local church uses harvest festival to support a food bank. I always add some jars to our contribution.
