Well, the bees that I did my basic on must have survived. I've been informed I've passed. :)

Well done you!
(It's a lovely feeling to know someone thinks you have a certain level of competence!)

Congratulations!
Now you are qualified to take the 'Module' theory exams ... and to wear the badge!

Congratulations! I'd love to have a crack at this. Well done :)

Congratulations.....passing exams always feels good. Well done you!

Just curious, what is involved in this??

The syllabus is on the BBKA website. You are assessed at the assessor's apiary.
At mine he watched me light a smoker. He asked me to inspect one of his hives while talking about what I was doing, why I was doing it and what I saw. I was asked to make up a frame. Then over a cup of tea he asked me several questions from the syllabus. It was all very friendly and relaxed and the assessor told me lots of things I did not know. Several weeks later I was told I had passed. I think every body should at least study the basic syllabus even if they do not take the exam.

You also have to have been keeping your own bees for 1 year.

Whole thing needs updating... the ( unapproved) book by Yates which seems to be the basic study notes was written by a fifties beekeeper and is full of dogma, misinformation and stuff that is simply wrong.

I have yet to meet anyone who has taken the BBKA Basic to have failed!

I was tested by somebody who in now an RBI. Basic is the word. Couldn't believe how basic it was!! So basic I thought I couldn't possibly pass let alone ever be considered a proper basic beek. Same bod who inspected all mine on 8 June this year was very complimentary so I must be doing something right - despite SWMBO scrutiny and others who shall be nameless.

I know of one, he dropped two supers. :icon_204-2:

The chap who owns the the land where I have a hive, and nearly all our local allotments, insist on the Basic before they will allow you to keep bees.

So no Itma, I won't be wearing any badge.
But I will keep studying.

Thanks to all.

:iagree: The references to Brother Adam and the Buckfast in 7.1 are well out of date and 7.2 (record keeping) is a complete joke

I tend to agree, notes available on the internet are much more up to date.

Unless 'Yates' is a syndicate the books won't be updated because I think he died earlier this year.

This is the mid bucks BKA blog link to their tnfo sheet

https://modulenotes.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/basic-assessment-exam-notes-2015.pdf

it gives the basic things you need to know, The disease questions are heavily weighted and the lady we use is hot on honey extraction hygiene, the examiners tend to be local beekepers who have passed the bbka intermediate module certificate and General husbandry assessment and don't have two heads

and congrats to cussword

That is why they are generally unapproved by the BBKA, except for module 1 for some strange reason. But given the numerous criticisms of the BBKA they contain I'm surprised that their detractors don't think they should be the bibles fro the modules :)
Their major use is to put the syllabus in perspective and give you a basic idea of where to expand from and it's not all incorrect. The BBKA tends to give a huge reference list of books that would cost a small fortune, many are hard to find and out of print e.g. Wisdom of the hive by Seeley.

I thought I'd revive this
Look at what I found on another site.
Do you get badges for all the modules and do folk sew them on their suits like Cub Scout badges? ;)

My Basic badge has a green background, it's in a cupboard. Some people sew them onto their suits. I don't think the modules get badges.
