Anyone found Asian Hornet queens in wasp traps this spring?

the nests are no way as big as you see in mid to southern France , for the geographical reason. you need heat, real early heat. .

That is reassuring, thank you. We don't often get hot springs. At the moment! How long before we get locally adapted Asian Hornets? :spy:

I found one dead in wasp trap that was on over the winter. Have to say that just the size of this insect is scary. Thank God for the wasp trap

The Asian hornet is smaller than our own hornet. Are you sure that's what it was? I'll echo madasafish.........did you report it?

You sure it was a hornet. If it was pretty big, it could have been the Hornet Mimic Hoverfly. Was it something like this? Big and scary looking, but harmeless. I get them round here all the time during the summer.

Or one of our own European hornets. By all accounts the Asian Hornet is somewhat unremarkable looking.

Not a hornet expert at all, but didn't look like normal ones that I see creating nests all the time somewhere, also didn't look like one you posted. Had a big black bump and very tall legs...not a bumble bee. Just didn't look like anything I have seen before. Not sure what to do, as i didn't keep it.

Sounds like a wood wasp
Anything like this?

Thanks to the members who have posted pics of unusual insects.

Last week, I caught something in one of my hornet traps that had me reaching for the NBU Asian Hornet fact sheet. It wasn't an AH but I couldn't identify it.

It was smaller than a wasp, wings were longer than the body, the abdomen was all yellow and the "thigh" part of the front legs was yellow. Any ideas ?

The trap was near a river and trees. There is a farm (cattle and chickens) close by and also some residential estates.
