If test kit in AFB would be usefull, it should reviele out spores in the hive. Test does not help, if you see the disease allready with eyes.

German tests tell, that laboratory test finds out spores 2 years earlier than symptoms become visual.

As said before, EFB is not a problem.
.

Can you explain why EFB is not a problem?

As for field testing, as stated we test for metabolites, so if spores are there then there is a high chance of picking up metabolites early, long before a noticeable outbreak. The problem then becomes what people do once they are aware ;). Over use of of any antimicrobial is never good, not everyone is willing to destroy and burn something that dosnt look infected..........It isnt so much a problem for larger scale keepers, but smaller scale it can be harder to let your head rule your heart.

When you give a new EFB resistant queen to the hive, the disease vanishes. But you must change the whone genepool of you apiary. So it says in many countries disease identification booklets.

Chalkbrood is the same.

45 years ago I had much EFB cases. I had Black bee mongrels and Caucasian X Black Bee crossings. I do not remember, when I last saw efb in my hives.

Modern bee breeds are really healthy compared to old "natural mongrels".

I use to kill new queens, if their brood area is not even.

Yes just my very badly made frames but they work and are cheap. I'm in Portugal and they are called Lusitana's similar to 12X14 uk nationals with smaller lugs. Are you on Langstroth in Finland?

Can you spot the one broken cell cap, thats a frame with AFB, things improving. Did a full shook swarm onto new frames but colony so big I failed to see the queen.

We use in Finland American langstroth and mediums. Many use only mediums, because they are light to lift..

Russian langstroth is couple of centimeters shorter, and what ever other langstroth dimensions exist.

I use 4 american Langstroths. I do find them awkward to carry with the length, suppose I'm not used to them, I almost have to lean over them to carry.

Do you use foundations generally?

It depends to be honest, in a good flow like Blueberry we just have I tend to just run a bead of wax over a wired frame and they draw it out in a week or less and so easy to find the queen. If its a start or end of a flow I usually use 1/4 foundation, then they make drones as required then store honey. If its start or end of the year I use full frame foundation. How about you?
