Where do people on the forum buy their acetic acid from?

Th*rne is quite expensive compared to some other online suppliers and is collection only. Would Boots or Manor pharmacy stock such an item?

Being a newbie I have to ask what its for? However at that concentration its going to have transport risks.
I think fish and chip shops buy their vinegar in concentrated form and dilute for use. Alternatively you could ask someone like BP Chemicals at Saltend if they know of consumers in your vicinity. They would probably sell you 20 tonnes of Acetic Anhydride given all sorts of checks on your suitability and storage/handling facilities

I recently got some from Bonnymans, but sadly I can no longer recommend them as I had problems with my order - eventually sorted to my satisfaction, but not without a deal of angst. PM me if you need some pointers re ordering from them.

The soap kitchen was a good price for glacial at one time; not checked for some time. But you do need to competent with chemicals with ethanoic at 80%, let alone 100%.

Answering my own question, google tells me 80% Acetic is used for sterilising. It also shows up C Wynn Jones are listed suppliers.

Acetic Acid supply 80%

5 litres from Bonnym**ns ordered a month ago, delivered 2 days after order and nil problems. Couldn't fault the service.

Just done a quick 'Ebay' - plenty of suppliers of 99% - dilute it yourself.

Soap Kitchen in 1 litre bottles. Not particularly speedy delivery as I recall but good price.

80% is used for fumigating comb, frames and boxes. Should be effective against wax moth and Nosema among others. Needs care in handling. Vacuum storage bags from pound shop are useful to fumigate a box or two of frames - you don't need the vacuum, it's just a big ziplock bag.

How is it used on comb?

Notwithstanding, it's used at a rate of 125ml per box of brood frames in a plastic or glass container, this is placed in a covered stack for 7 days to allow the fumes to fill the stack.

These are then left to air out for a week.

I had an issue this year where it has caused the exposed wires to rust :(

You must check how to use these chemicals, and make sure you have all the right breathing mask, goggles, gloves, boots and other clothing!!

Does anyone know where I can get hold of some acetic acid without paying more in carriage than the cost of purchase? Happy to buy if I can collect or share a purchase

That depends, to a great extent, on how much you require or wish to purchase for use and stock.

enough to do ten supers O90

This is the way to go ;)

Wooden hive components such as stored supers and empty combs can be sterilised by gamma rays from a radioisotope of cobalt.

When using irradiation to sterilise hives after foul brood infection, you should only do this under the guidance of your local bee Inspector.

Any suggestion of where to buy the cobalt or the screened enclosures and handling apparatus? bee-smillie

I have used Acetic Acid 80% several times to sterilize drawn combs and frames.

I smear a little petroleum jelly on metal runners and castellations to protect them.

Acetic acid vapour is heavier than air so I place the tray of acid above the frames.

I don't think glacial acetic acid and acetic anhydride are thee same thing at all.
Acetic anhydride is used among other thing for the acetolysis process in pollen analysis and is quite dangerous to handle.:nono:

Definitely not the same at all.

Glacial acetic acid (systematic name ethanoic acid) is caustic but no more difficult to handle than household bleach but I would also wear goggles.
Simple to dilute if you have 99-100%. 80ml acetic with 20ml water.

Acetic anhydride is very reactive so would need very careful handling in terms of knowing the correct concentration to use. Think it is being used to acylate proteins in pollen but just guessing.
