When to and not to feed pollen party's?

I use pollen patties in March to stimulate brood rearing. However I have just put small amounts on the crown boards of 3 nucs into which I have introduced purchased queens.

when to ....?

When they need it.

They are going to find brooding difficult if there is a dearth of protein.

You might like to read what the National Bee Unit advised in April 2013 :
Following our post about bee starvation and what looks to be another few weeks of terrible weather, it is advisable to start thinking about feeding your colonies some form of pollen substitute. By now the winter bees will have started to die off and the production of brood to replace these loses are important. However, without suitable protein and nectar, the development of brood will be damaged and in some instances may not happen at all..

I note that you are in New Jersey, in the USA.
I'm sure there will be climatic (so time and forage) differences between the Shore and up in the Tri-State --- let alone with the various parts of the UK.

If there isn't 'much' pollen stored in your hive, think of feeding extra.
Early spring brood rearing is the likeliest time -- but your local forage will determine that.
Some would offer extra protein while queen rearing (so the queen cell gets LOTS of royal jelly), but hopefully you'd have frames with pollen to be presenting to them at that time.

just given pollen patties to two nucs which are recently established. Both queens have started laying.

I can see that there are not enough bees to forage in proportion to the new bees recently hatched plus the amount of eggs, and capped brood. The weather has gone cooler so I have fed both pollen patties and 1 - 1 sugar syrup.

If they don't want it - they won't eat it.
Good Luck
