What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I didn't expect my much-loved STC1000 to break, but the heating part of the thermostat failed. Result: the cooling part stayed on, struggling to keep the heat down. I spotted it before any honey was damaged.

It was a simple matter to get a new unit, fit it, and see everything working again. Finding a nice piece of kit is a bit like finding a good tradesman: the joy of seeing a job well done.

The soft start, how did you achieve that ?

You can buy soft start units on the likes of ebay these days. They just wire into the power switch. I think I crimped a few spade connectors onto the one I bought and then I was able to connect it without even cutting any wiring.

Finished making crownboards and I brought home some more scrap from work so I can make a few more clearer boards though I've got no further with that than trimming the wood for the sides to width.

This evening has been an extended wrestling session with Libre Office, designing some new labels. The important one is hopefully finally complete and I'm just dithering over whether to make a granulation label for the back of the jar. I don't really feel the need, but on the other hand it is an opportunity to have a bit of a poke at cheap supermarket honey :D

Finished cutting the wood to make more clearer boards and started assembling them. My table saw is now lying in an exhausted heap in a corner of the workshop :D

I've also been doing a little more work on my new label designs and designed/3d-printed some labelling jigs for 1lb round and 12oz hex jars, although that has taken somewhat longer than intended as my 3d-printer was sulking after not being used for a while and needed a bit of adjustment to get it working properly again. I don't actually plan to sell any 1lb jars, but one of the landowners where I have hives likes to re-use the jars for the honey I give him, so I might as well do the job properly in case other people see them.

I carried a pallet home at the end of the dog walk this afternoon. An hour later I had four very serviceable ekes.

Then I used some offcuts of 50mm PIR to make a cosy for a mini nuc (Apidea). This is a colony which was hiding in the honeysuckle when I was closing down my queen raising stuff at the end of August. I'll keep them topped up with fondant and perhaps this cosy will help them retain what warmth they can generate.

I'm sure someone here recommended a tool for breaking up pallets a while back. We sometimes get a few we don't need. I must try to find the post.

Incredibly useful tool for demolishing all types of pallets including Euro pallets. Also makes lifting floorboards and taking down ceiling panels easy. The long handle reduces the need for bending and has a double-injected soft-grip handle for comfortbale use.

Pallet dismantling us a no-no for me. I cut the boards with a battery circular saw beside the nails and don't take any which will give me pieces shorter than 460mm.

Is all this work renewals or a planned expansion ? I hope you have tidied that sawdust pile.

I love a good scavenge. Collecting some 6ft lengths of treated decking on Saturday. I don;t need it but...old habits and all that

Partially vaguely-planned expansion at the moment, combined with the need to be in a position to cope with the eventual consequences of this year's developments. It depends how things pan out next year, but if all goes well I don't want to be scrabbling around for kit any more than I have to, so whilst I have time and materials it probably makes sense to prepare.

The sawdust pile is still there and getting larger. I'm waiting to see if I can leave it long enough for it to become sentient.

Yes, I will go with much of that thinking, this year I had thought myself somewhat prepared but like yourself found myself scrambling.I was totally shocked when I actually completed preps for winter. I burn my sawdust in combination with other wood as a dampener. I have 2 extractors but as the bags fill it is like a feeling of foreboding knowing the proper pain in the backside of emptying and replacing that looms.
