Snow here again this morning too. So sat in waiting for my parcel from Thornes to arrive. I rang Fed Ex who haven't got it and then Thornes found it in the corner of their despatch room with no label. So FedEx have the label but not the box and Thornes have the box with no label!

Getting it delivered by DPD tomorrow instead!

Quickly opened a hive and put some fondant on top as it felt like they was geting a bit light, will do a full inspection in a week or two when it heats up, looked like they was a good amount of bees and still wax capping falling on the floor below the hive.

.
First day today, that bees forage willow pollen with real loads. Willow has bloomed 2 weeks but, temp has been low. It is now 12C. At 10C they could not get pollen.

Temps are rising to 15C and sun shining.

Mine have been piling it in from a willow wood for around about 2 weeks but during this last week they have been house bound.

Bees on Bluebells here.
Sun's out but it's cold.
Better day tomorrow.
Heard yesterday that we have a Thornes agent now in Lampeter so no more postage for little orders :)
Even better news........new bees coming tomorrow, so excited :)

Brilliant news for you ;) , i have not forgot about them shrubs either but by god are they hard to germinate, i'm starting to see roots in the bottom of the pots so in a months time they should be good to go.

Had a quick peek inside my weak & suspiciously drone-heavy colony (a March observation from outside the hive - they were popping out the front door like drunkards off for a kebab). Pleased and relieved to find a new Queen, a couple of decent patches of regular brood and larvae too. Imminent shower brought that to a rapid close.
The excitement really started when I put my grass-plugged smoker away in the boot room & came back 10 mins later to find a kitchen full of oak-chip smoke. Oooops, some explaining to SWMBO :toetap05: to do.....

15 minutes after putting them in their new home.
Aren't bees wonderful......and so is the lovely fellow beekeeper who gave them to me.

Its been a while since I built a frame, and Arran took to it like a pro!! Then we took advantage of a gap in the weather to see what hive 2 had made of the demaree we did last week. Despite the awful weather, they've been drawing the frames we put in. Looking forward to brighter weather.

Took the opportunity presented by today's warm & sunny weather to go through my hives.

The smallest, which was almost totally free of stores a week ago, and had a feed of light syrup, is now piling in the nectar and has drawn out the last of its frames fully. May well need a super in the next week.

The biggest had a 2nd super put on to accommodate both the flow and the large number of bees - no sign of any QCs yet despite the big colony size.

The middle hive is building up nicely but the little blighters have gone built a queen cup, and her ladyship has gone and plonked an egg in it. They've got some space yet, so I'm in two minds as to whether I need to do a Pagden AS, or whether putting a super on will make them change their minds.

Hmmmm choices choices - but it appears that the season has started!
