What did you do in the Apiary today?

Bees been busy all week, inspected today plenty of stores and now on 7 frames of brood added super as they are running out of space.

Had a couple of hours free time from work lovely day here so out with the beesuite, I managed to find and mark my 2 queens what a thrilling moment when spotted. both hives doing well slowly filling the supers I put on over a week ago.
The only downside was the one hive seemed to have some chalkbrood I had a bit last year but thought it had gone.

After I did all my hives today I stopped to watch one of someone elses, it seemed very quite and there was no pollen going in. After about 3mins I noticed the back of my head getting bombed by a couple of bees so decided to move away, I was standing a good 10ft from it, as I moved away I got stung on the back of the head. I have got to say its the most painful place I have ever been stung. I then had to sprint to the car followed by a good dozen or so bees trying to sting, serves me right for not keeping my hood on while just watching.

On the good side the sting doesn't seem to have swollen to badly, I will see how it is in the morning.

there are a couple of fields of winter feed beet that has come into flower near one of my apiarys, the flower looks just like osr, the bees are getting pollen from it but I cant see if they are getting nectar from it. Can anyone advise me if they will.

cheers

Had a quick peek in the peach orchard hives - I supered two of them less than two weeks ago - for space more than anything else - it is aproaching winter you know! One had bees in but no sign of drawing but the other has drawn five frames and almost finished filling them.
The other hive is still weak so I'll just have to leave them to their own devices now

Doh! Schoolgirl error, forgot to put a QX under the super on one of my hives - one week later and I now have 6 shallow frames all laid up beautifully! Queen is now safely down below in the brood box UNDER an excluder this time.

Bailey comb changes are going well on two other hives and I've just added a 3rd super to my WBC, probably a bit premature but better safe than sorry, plus this one is full of foundation only, so it will take a bit work before they can use it :)

Happy days.

Just completed my first AS of the season, (boring old Pagden.)

Played "bet I know where the queen is" and won, found her 2nd frame in. She has pretty much lost her red dot.

Must get on and make up some more brood frames and set a bait hive.

Cazza

Just mounted 3 bait hives in trees around a town 10 miles from me(with permission from the landowners and a promise of honey for a catch)
Now just need one if the local beeks to mess up

That's generous! They would probably be equally cooperative knowing that you may have spared their chimneys from bee-occupation!

Decided to do a little project so strapped a bait hive on my window sill (Its only a paynes poly nuc so not big enough really but worth a punt). I have placed some nice old comb in there, some propolised but undrawn foundation and lemongrass oil. Have then set up a motion detection camera at window pointing at entrance to catch any visitors. Got video of one bee paying it a visit this morning and popping inside for a very quick look. We'll see what happens. Would be amazing to get the video of a full swarm moving in... As Moggs says, fingers crossed.

Brings back memories. I used to drink in the beehive. I used to work in The London Buttterfly house

I have had a beer also in the beehive pub Steve it's a lovely pub and a magnificent skep on the roof. I miss the London butterfly house loved it when the nieces and nephew came to visit as I had an excuse. I remember when one of the escapees arrived at my old workshop a big blue wonderful thing it was.

bloody hell Roola, that's nothing short of 'enticement' how can my bees resist, soft music as well?

Inspected a few hives including this double brood hive with 14 frames of brood. I was going to remove one brood box and refit a new box and frames but given its size decided to fit a third brood to give room and in a few weeks will split to raise a queen or two as she is a good one and the bees just lovely.
