First honey

I started with a nuc in July and thought it was maybe expecting too much to get some honey this year. When I put a super on in early August the bees didn't seem too keen on moving up into it, so I removed the QE and so ended up with brood and a half which has worked well. Today, I robbed them of one frame and ended up with 4 X 125g jars of honey. Its cost a fortune so far, but worth every penny.

Started extracting - six bulging supers so far with my trusty hand operated extractor - my right arm now feels as sore as a public schooboy's after light out on matron's washing day! - forgot the old instruction of changing hands after every ten cranks!:D

Last of the frames extracted yesterday evening - with the aid of my 7 year old niece; All honey now in settling tanks, extractor washed this morning and supers neatly stacked in the kitchen awaiting SWMBO's assistance in bagging them up then they can be safely taken outside (Brynmair seems surrounded by wasps lurking with intent at the moment! all cappings in the process of being washed ready for melting - stage one is 24 hours soak in a couple of litres vodka before being washed in our tap supplied clear spring water (sold in the shops a Brecon Carreg)
Went to get SWMBO's chickens today, they are now safely installed in their new run and coop. Rifle sights re-zeroed for distance between chicken run and dining room window in case of unhealthy interest by passing reynard :D

Night vision?

Swept away a few bee bodies after the first 24hrs of MAQS, not as bad as I'd feared though. Re-applied 3rd Apilife Var treatment on another hive.
Postie failed to bring my honey labels again! I'm dying to get them on my '12 jars' to prove to friends and neighbours that my bees are earning their keep.....well a few of them are anyway!
Amazing how much quieter everything is when the temperature dips a bit.

Went and Added more syrup to hives in one apiary they have now had 25ltr each. Went and checked on second site, really weird some hives really heavy, some starving but strong with bees. certain not being robbed though, have made up 25ltr of strong syrup to take up tomorrow first thing.

Mind you went and looked at someone elses hives and there was one that had atleast 200 wasps all over the roof and front and going in and out of it, plus 5 of their other ones were being attacked by hundreds of wasps to. Hope they can sort it out, will make sure all of mine have very small enterances to when I put the feed on.

Got around to sorting out a nuc that was being bothered by wasps. Normally i would just knock the q off and let the rest find their way into the other hives but this one had a new q in it that had not really had a fair chance and I have one hive that although it does well, has had a problem with chalk brood, so the q from the nuc went in there where she might do some good.
I have not forgiven the wasps so a w***bane trap has gone where the nuc was. Serves them right!

Checked varroa floor as treating with apiguard.
Saw 6 wax moth lavae on board
Squished them and cursed, now treating with pinot grigio whilst deciding next step.
Dont want to open hive to inspect as only 1 week into treatment

Found zillions of wasps caught in traps (Karols type) so went on a wasp nest hunt; found 2 nests and zapped with the powder stuff.

Checked varroa drop but most of my trays had earwigs on & I think they might have carted off some mites. My poly hive has a different tray and that one showed plenty of mites - about 500 after 1 week - so HMs thymol pads are doing their thing.

Ivy just beginning to flower & balsam still coming in.

Yesterday I noticed some fuss at the entrance, and saw one hornet got too close: "Sisters are doing it for themselves" ( defending)..

Yesterday.
Quick look, all hives Q+. Hives are busy, but I dont think there is a lot of forage about. One hive finished MAQS treatments without the massive fall out others are reporting. Other two are having Apiguard, but no big mite drop seen. Adjusted my Pxxxxx's feeders so they will be ready to use later on, wish there an easier way to saw through polystyrene.

Today.
Made up 12L syrup, then made Hivemaker's emulsified thymol ready to add to it. Kitchen stinks!!

Getting in the supers - tedious job..

.....be extracting the honey after that....

.....then soon will be able to forget about them until spring.
