What did you do in the Apiary today?

Just been to check inspection boards and put 2nd dose of thymol on. Only a small drop but one hive needs immediate feeding as almost no stores, it has lots of capped brood so I guess they have used up all their stores feeding larvae. There's no balsam in this area so no forage really.

Just about to start mixing syrup up, and will go down this evening and put it on.

Yep ... mine are exactly the same ... loads of capped brood but appear to be working their way rapidly through the stores. Lots of bees flying and some pollen coming in but not as much as last week.

I'm going to make up some feed tomorrow and get a feeder on.

Colonies have had one week of apiguard. I have looked at the inspection boards and can't see any varroa mites at all..... though I did disturb quite a few earwigs on one of the boards so maybe they have been chomping.
I have a query though - the inspection boards were covered in black debris - like brood cappings having been chewed off but black - anyone any ideas what it is? Does the Apiguard react with wax cappings like this?

Quick inspection today, was worried they might be short of food but seems they have plenty of stores. Bit of condensation under polycarb crownboard was a bit worrying (have open OMF) but planning to put some insulation between c/b and roof for winter, hopefully that will solve it. Seems I've gone from not being able to keep the smoker going during an inspection to not being able to get the thing to go out (realised it was still going well after driving home and leaving on side for a while). Need to make a decent stopper for it rather than stuffing grass in the thing :)

Sitting on a bench watching they madly flying in and out - plenty of ghosts at last - but no idea where they are finding it...and wishing I was allowed to go peek inside- but still at least another week until I am allowed to play...:( so hubby gets to work alone again. At least I should be fit enough to put right the issues before winter - when I am finally allowed...

Nothing.

All roads round my area snarled up due to the RAFA Airshow at Shoreham airport.

Mind you really don't mind I love watching the displays from my bedroom window as I no more that 500m from the end of the runway, fantastic seeing the Eurofighter, Vulcan and Battle of Britain flight go over at such low levels.

Will post pics later if anyone wants them.

Nothing useful, although I have learned that a wasp sting to the thumb is worse than a bee sting to the same place.

Nothing! been windy and cold here so far and now I am too tired. Few bees flying. Hope for better weather tomorrow.

Been through 2 hives and nucleus box. Put a clearer board in to remove supers so I can have the Apiguard on by the end of the week. Then I checked the nuc box, it had a small cast swarm that is expanding slowly and needs feeding now to help it on its way. The other hive was another matter entirely. It has been deteriorating in behaviour and today was aggressive and attacking throughout. Grrrrrr.

Just extracting the last of the years honey. I shall miss that lovely sweet scented aroma filling the whole of the kitchen........aaahh!

Just made up the first batch of autumn feed syrup, might extract the final 5 supers if honey (although there could be more with next weeks hot spell on the way).

This makes a total of 14 supers off just 2 hives, with the others all building up after my losses 2 years ago...possibly my best result for some years as an average, and not even practiced migratory beekeeping either.

Just a shame the summer is almost over !

I combined a couple of colonies, took the tab off a queen cage on another and put some fondant on some hives that were a little light, but haven't quite finished their Apiguard.

Put MAQS on my hives

Craig

It's been fine with us, no sign of rain and none promised but anyway i find a galvanised roof keeps all the water off without any help :D

Association apiary day today - found two supersedure cells in my hive (capped in the last day or two by my calculation) and the queen still present, but they don't seem to want to expand. Put a clearer board on that hive to get rid of the super which may help them concentrate their efforts.
Checked the two 'abandoned' nucs that i'm caring for one is starting to draw wax but the other not doing much, I'm afraid they won't have much hope for the winter if they don't expand a little.Just have to wait and hope. All ably assisted by a person down here on his holiday who thought he'd like to see how other association apiaries do it - he's also a forum member! thanks Davnig

Yes please!

Yes please!

Popped a selection up from both this year and last year in my profile. The Vulcan was cancelled due to a fuel leak and the camera battery ran out by the time the Eurofighter was displaying but it was a good display.

I love when they set off the car alarms in the road as they go over haha.

Thymol treatment & checking of brood/stores in brood boxes. Mostly looking good. One hive had virtually no stores so fed some syrup.

Found a black wasp(?) with an orange band on the upper part of its abdomen in one hive. Not sure what type.

My "all mediums" poly hive has plenty of honey in the top box, brood in the middle & the bottom box is more or less empty. I was expecting to see pollen in the bottom.

Nice photos DP ... Vulcan brings back memories of the RAF Finningley (Doncaster) September air displays in the 1960's, I used to go every year ... there were two whole squadrons of Vulcans and Victors based there in those days, our nuclear deterrent ... Highlight of the airshow was a scramble and subsequent flypast by a formation of Vulcans who then turned on the afterburners at the end of the runway and went up almost vertically ... spectacular ... probably also why I'm suffering hearing loss !!

It was a real treat ... loads of static displays and lots of wartime aircraft.

There was also usually a Lightning flypast ... on at least one occasion breaking the sound barrier ... they would never get away with it now !!

Loved the 'photo's !! The Lancaster flew overhead here in MK yesterday at approx' 15.30hrs, looked and sounded great

:iagree:
