What did you do in the Apiary today?

Yesterday whole day was cloudy and relative cold. When dark came, the sky cleared and in the morning frost.. There is no more happier than me.. In a few days will see if anything left of black locust - my main forage which for years can't remember to see significant.. Wild cherries were gathered nice then howling cold winds shook down the flowers and cold weather.. Now bees eat what they gathered.. Black ash started to flower, but this frost.. Unbelievable.. Also saw walnuts and hazels tips burnt.. It is like all against me.. Working all the time and all wiped in a sec.. Our apricots were full with fruits already ( size of marble already), and question is will it remain something on a tree..).
To be more merrier recently I became unemployed, well, it will be interesting time.. I wait to see what will remain after frost and will act accordingly..

Bad day. Inspected all 4 colonies which were doing fine. On the second I caught and re-marked the queen but then made a schoolboy error in not drawing down the sponge in the one-handed catcher before opening the excluder. Rolled the queen and she didn't make it.

First accidental regicide for me and, although there is loads of BIAS and I know they'll generate emergency cells, still feel pretty rotten. I had been considering moving this hive up from national to 14x12 in a week or two but guess this will take a good while longer now.

Do most of you leave 2 charged cells or get rid of all bar one?

Not a good day, I've just returned from the apiary where I euthanised two hives that the SBI had confirmed had EFB. I have no idea where it came from because these hives have been no where near the apiaries that were affected last year. ☹️

Bad luck :( I leave only one nowadays, but you have to be super careful with that cell. It needs to have a live grub in it and it mustn't get chilled of course. The process of opening up the hive to remove cells etc. can expose the cell to the cold and they are also super fragile and easy to damage as they stick out from the comb.

That's not so good Goran - you do seem to get more than your fair share of bad luck ... hope it improves for you.

That's not good news Neil ... Nothing on Beebase in the vicinity ....?

I've not looked but from memory there was a warning email last year.

Hell! You could do without that. We had an AFB outbreak a mile away last year and my SBI said she’d rather deal with that. At least the hive was destroyed and that was it. EFB hung around no matter what you did with it

I feel I ought to go and finish yesterday's job in the apiary today, but whilst temperatures here reached 20°C yesterday, so far today we've barely reached 10°C, it's so dull that the dandelion flowers aren't opening and the bees are all staying home.

Inspected my main apiary. Generally the hives are developing well but one was superseding so I nuced the queen.
Another hive was bursting with bees and sealed brood but not an egg or larva to be seen. I would normally assume she had tried to swarm and died outside as she was clipped but there was no sign of queen cells anywhere. The bees seem very happy, well behaved and calm. I can only imagine shes gone off lay for a period!

Inspected both hives yesterday and in one of them the queen appeared to be smaller than she was last time, but it definitely was the same queen as was marked. Is this something to be concerned about? Does this mean that she is potentially nearing end of her life. Thanks

Never noticed this. But they do slim them down in advance of swarming - not sure if this is something that the beekeeper could spot with the naked eye though.

PS: When was "last time" - a week ago, or 6 months ago?

Last time was two days ago. Also there were charged cells that I removed yesterday.
