I think Spring has sprung this morning. The girls were out and about in numbers from about 10am, despite the still cold air.

-2 C here in the morning but glorious during the day..saved around 100 chilled bees today fully laden with pollen from the Crocus..the little darlings where laid all over the floor under the landing board...probably treble the amount if no landing board was in place..a quick warm in a Chinese take away tub over the gas ring and all went straight back into the hive entrance alive and well..

I did that this afternoon actually. Mouseguard off, reducer in. I need to inspect these guys tomorrow if the weather is the same. One of my other colonies could use a frame of brood. No BIAS when when I inspected them today.

Well "a quick warm" sounds eminently sensible!

But a take away tub (plastic - most likely polypropylene) over the gas ring (open flame) ?

Really?

I'm no expert but you should not be inspecting at this time of the year.......

Fully agree with saving chilled bees. I find a heated plant propagator is just right temperature-wise to bring bees back to life.

I'd imagine he's using a foil takeaway container not directly held over the open flame, but a few inches away just to get some heat.

Can't imagine Steve would be burning a plastic tub filled with bees on his hob.

True mate..who in there right mind would hold any flammable material close enough to a flame that it would set on fire.. let alone a container with bees in it that i am trying to save not kill..some folk really have no idea and i can not even be bothered to reply to the silly comment...

Willows and cornel were hit by the frost aaand bees are back on the meadow.. Some odd plums, apricots and pears opened and also got scorched with frost.. They opened a lot earlier than should and no surprise they are done for this season. Even this night will be frost.. Frogs laid also eggs in ditches.. Tomorrow there will be some ice eggs.. All went nuts.. I gave today fondants to colonies.. Strong brooding and stores are melting, have to support them to continue with their work.. I have made a lot of fondants for this season, just in such case to intervene.. All are alive ( except one gone in December), but few are 3-4 seams which I will terminate when it become some warmer. I presume they lost queen or such..
One hive got damaged bottom board.. I presume one beast thought it will be easy meal.. But it is one of the strongest colonies, with not so low temps. It seems that creature only got some wood for meal before running away..

Last night waxed jenter cups.. A bit messy..

13 C so did first visit of year to out-apairy to heft hives and see if flying. All flying bar one (empty of bees, no evidence of brood, no dead on floor or in cells and plenty of stores) assume they became queenless and workers absconded to join adjacent colonies. Rest of hives plenty of stores, no woodpecker damage so next visit will be sometime in April.

I'm contunually astounded at the stupid things people do .. it would probably have been best to specify that it was an aluminium foil takeaway container in the frst place ? Saves any ambiguity and pert comments about silly comment.

Fed some warm syrup to the hives at home all going mad today.

So many chilled bumble Bees around this year. Worse than I have ever seen.
