More areas for the bees to guard. Easier access for robbing bees and wasps. Not the best example of husbandry by the beekeeper.
 
Bees in my observation hive groom each other so I dont see any reason why other bees dont so the same. When they emerge from the cell they stagger about for a bit on wobbly legs and within a minute or two one or more bees will start to clean it, and the other bees are often seen grooming.

when i watched i thought he just had small offset entrances (at end rather then middle of entrance blocks?
