my ropes have to be reasonably slack to allow for any rise in the river overnight that makes the boat move around and in this particular spot the fenders need to line up with the pilings and if the boat moves bang as the fenders miss the pilings as the hull hits. .

You should try rigging fender boards

I have seen a few photos of bots high and dry so far and sad to say a good few will sink when the waters drop with parts of the boats snag the banks or pontoons. There was a photo of a rather expensive river cruiser sunk making its way down the Thames and probably stuck on some weir right now.

Bit to small to have all the kit and this is unusual for me. Tying the fenders so they hang sideways works ok. But the pilings on this stretch is the steel pilings you often see on the motorways but I've got it sorted now.

my GP14ft dingy was washed off Goring sailing club's hard stand in 2008 floodsand ended up on mapleduram weir, I received a Bill from thames Conservancy or what ever theyarecalled now for removing the dingy and disposal ( and as outside the summer it was not insured)

My freind uses empty ambrosia syrup containers as fenders, workswell

Hope all is well Tom.
I can't remember such relentless rain and wind. Seems to have been going on for two months.
At least we seem to be getting near the end of the tunnel. Let's hope the light is not an oncoming train

I wish all you boat chaps well in this awful weather. We are very lucky as moored in Brighton Marina and the staff check regularly. One time a finger (wooden strip boat tied to) broke free and took ours out a little but they retrieved.

Once returning from IOW we hit rough weather and the boat was turned 180d. and it was NOTHING like this wind. Keep safe. x

Reading through this thread makes me so very glad to be flying home tonight.....:p
I have been travelling through Chile, Bolivia and Peru these last five weeks and it would seem that I will get a real shock to the system when I get home:( temps were in the high Thirties when I arrived in Lima the other day..... I'll be glad to get a run around my apiaries during the week ahead to try to gauge how the ladies are doing.

Not in that league Phil just a small navigable river /canal just so happens I am in a spot that is catching the strong gusts
Just back in from setting more fenders and I think I have sorted it. The wind is noisy but then that's what you get for living in a steel corridor. The gusts are whipping water up off the canal never seen that before.

Gawd, I don't fancy your predicament. Passenger killed today on cruise ship Marco Polo in the Channel due to the storm. I don't fancy your chances. R.I.P.

Not that bad, only an unusually windy night that kept me awake most of the night, put me in a grumpy mood at work today but all is back to normal now, good old canal time.

Shame about the passenger and the cruise ship hit with the big wave and not the only casualty of the storms.

SWMBO had the same problem here - she's threatening to ban me drinking guinness - well, it was my farewell Friday in the club!

its supposed to be bright and sunny up here on Sunday (today) but I have just walked home from the pub and its blowing a gale and very cold

I won't be around to witness it then?
VM :D
