I have had two personal encounters with the so called travellers.

One was when my wife was taken seriously ill in the NE of England while we were on a motor home break. I found a little spot near a beach so I could run the dogs and got organised.

Next thing was youngsters on quad and two wheel bikes getting faster and faster and closer and closer to the vehicle in a very intimidating manner. I packed up.

Sitting in a carpark in Coalville on a lovely day with the boot up and my 6 month old whippet pup between my legs I was approached by a young lad some 10 or 12 ish. He was from a group that were pretty clearly travellers, the transit tipper trucks were the clue here... he walked up to me and with out a word suddenly kicked the pup and ran off laughing.

From a motor home perspective they as a group have pretty much buggered up those of us who prefer not to be on camp sites. Councils are posting up prohibition notices all over and its not due to motor homes its ... well to my mind pretty obvious.

While i may not have much experience with bees i do with gypsies.

To the OP there are two distinct types.
The first, like the two gentleman i was sat having a cup of tea in my friends farm workshop the other day. are the old Romani, and know many of them and they are not perfect but not better or worse than most groups of people, many of them used to work on farms, one or two still do on at my friends and have a better understanding of nature than most, one was very pleased for me to be keeping bees.

The other sort are Didicoys or Irish travellers, what ever you want to call them, and they are the scum of the earth, they steal pets for bait dogs (dont ask) in fact they steal anything if it has enough value, con old people out of money for **** work, try and use intimidation and violence when ever things don't go their way, and when that doesn't work they will happily come in the night and burn a barn down in spite, they break through fences to go hare coursing and we have caught them 3 times stealing things from the farm.

So it will all depend on who it is moving in to the land next door, if its a Romani camp they will be little trouble, a bit cheeky but i have worked with them and trust some of them more that i would some normal folk, but if its a transit camp for Didicoys i would move the hives faster than i could spit.

And a good example of how different the two groups are, the site near the farm is nearly all Romani and when some Didicoys camped up illegally a little distance away and started causing trouble it was the some of the romani lads that went and politely asked them to move on, they do not appreciated the bad press they give the travelling community.

I'm not sure if finman called JBM an Irish Traveler or if JBM made an appeal to human decency and Christian forbearance. Either way, this is a highly polarized issue. The church I attend has been broken into twice over the last week with a few hundred dollars of equipment stolen. We are in process of putting up trail cams to catch them if they return. Just a suggestion, but trail cams might be a desirable addition if the hives are to be left in place. Ensure they are well hidden, otherwise both hives and cams might go missing.

I asked Grandad what kind of traveler he was yesterday when feeding my bees, up the old green lane.
He said his family were of Romany decent kind and he did not think much of the Hobledeyhoys, Irish Tinkers, Pikies and Diddeycoys... tarmackers were the worst.
Apparently Grandad was born on a Narrow boat in Reading, and turned out to be much the same age as myself!!

Sorry finsky such comments do you no favors and frankly i have come to expect better than that from you....You should be aware drawing comparisons between the 2 is just false. After all.....1 is a nasty snappy creature inclined to smell some what and bite your ankles, also with the annoying habbit of sniffing your crotch............The other is obviously the village dog
