Good observation.

1977 was a good vintage, but the Warres is past its best now....same goes for me !

Legend has it that port boxes were the building blocks of modern beehives (Warre in particular).

True or not ?

I have heard it said that Mr Langstroth used champagne boxes for his first removable frame hives...

If Carlsberg was sold in wooden boxes - they'd probably make the best beehives in the world! :)

ps

djg - looks like you're also wearing Sainsburys £3 heavy duty lined gloves that I've just discovered?

richardbees,

Hat-tip for the Carlsberg gag!

The gloves are sold by P*y**s (£8.35 for 50) and are described by them as follows :

"A thick and protective glove. Even so, the soft Nitrile stretches to accomodate your hand, minimising fatigue. 6 mil thick, with a 3"(7.6cm) longer cuff than average. Textured fingertips for good grip. Ideal to use when beekeeping."

My sons prefer the longer cuff on this glove, although I quite like the lighter nitriles from Th**nes for working my own bees.

For taking a swarm of bees, despite their normally docile state, I am happy to fall in with the youngsters, since I don't know (a) those bees and (b) how long they've been out of their hive, getting tetchier - and wandering gently "off-topic", just like this thread !

and WPF/paynes poly nucs make good boxes for 500ml beer/cider bottles - stops them sliding around in car on way back from supermarket.
