Thank you all, i have used magnifying glasses in the past but i find them awkward, the LED torch however works a treat but it is Black and we know what happens when something black goes near the bees ..

You can buy white and silver pocket LED torches.....It's what I use

I know a few people who found varifocals absolutely useless headache inducing things, suspect the options are one contact lens, bifocals seem more useful than Varifocals, or poke one lens out of your cheap glasses.

Final option would be a baseball cap under your veil with those flip down lenses fishermen wear....? You could probably move them or the cap unlike glasses without opening the veil.

Last week made the change to varifocals. Before spending the small fortune they cost, I couldn't see eggs. I still can't. Will try the led torch idea next. The varifocals have given me very clear distance vision, reading is still difficult as the area to look through is so small. Made me a bit queasy last week at work.

I'm going to ask the obvious...are you tilting the frames slightly when you look for eggs? If you hold frames vertically in front of you, you can't see the bottom of the cells due to their being slightly angled. You need to tilt them. That is a tilt away from you, so bottom of frame is further away than top.
Bright sunlight make it's harder to see eggs even when you can see the bottom of the cells.

I have tried tilting, but had no success thus far. I didn't know sunlight made it more difficult - that could be where I'm going wrong. Thanks for the advice.

I've not found the "black light" torches particularly good but I bought 1 of these of eBay which was absolutely brilliant.

Mini Pen USB Rechargeable Flashlight Stainless Steel LED Torch Light Camping

It's rechargeable via a USB port and has a very narrow and very bright light which shows eggs brilliantly.
It also clips into the pen pocket of the arm of my bee suit.
Very cheap and very good!

I've been wearing varifocals for 3 years and they work well for me. The only beekeeping problem I have with them is that when I get warm inside the beesuit and they slide south, I end up looking through the distance part for close-ups.

To overcome this I bought one of these from Ebay. You don't need much tension on the cord to keep the specs in position and after the session, the tension in the cord can be removed. Job's a goodun' - proper job!

A little update on the Glasses subject.
I wore my National Health type glasses today big thick framed type, and could i hell find any egg's, i did however find a marked slimmed down F1 Queen and several sealed Queen Cells that might be why the Gogs did not work on egg patrol, i destroyed all but one Queen cell (she is clipped).

I then jumped into the F2 colony could i hell find any eggs in there, i found young brood but no egg's.
I had a super with me full of fresh undrawn foundation to replace the super i was going to remove full of honey, it was on the floor beside the hive.

I went through the top brood box three times looking for the Queen and in the process destroying all Queen cell's, (this hive was going to receive a frame of egg's/brood from a good colony) but i could not find the clipped Blue marked Queen.

I placed to top brood box on top of the super with undrawn foundation beside the hive, i then went through the bottom box three times, nothing no brood or eggs Just stores.

I was over the moon i thought having a Queenless colony to receive a frame of brood and eggs from nice bees.

WRONG..when i put the hive back together the brood box below with undrawn foundation had a lot of bees inside, so my best thought was to throw them over the fence into long grass to clear them of bees which it did.
When i was finished i went to the super frames in the grass and lone behold i spotted one single bee running around the frames on the floor.
When i got closer i spotted them Long leg's and thought S..t ,i picked the frame up and she took flight, so i ran with the frame and put it in the direction she was flying and bingo she landed on it, i caught her in my hand and put her into the entrance of the hive, that is not something i do everyday but it has left this hive Queen right which i wanted Q- , not to worry we have hives and things to play with.

This bee keeping lark is so stressful at times but so much more rewarding other times, which is made easier wit you lot.
Cheers
Steve.

I know it goes against the grain for almost everyone of your latitudes but, you should put your hand in your pocket & invest in a proper eye test. :toetap05:

Seriously, they will check out more than your ability to see close up + you can then take the prescription anywhere for the cheapest glasses you can find, (I believe ASDA do a good deal). :hurray:

P.S.
Have you considered a monocle? :spy:

:iagree: At my eye test before last they picked up increased pressure in my eyes which leads to glaucoma and blindness if not treated, eye drops daily.

Eyesight is a good thing to have and retain.

  • Varifocals - they take a week or three to get used to but I have now been using them for a decade and would not be without them.
  • Get your eyes tested locally (free once you reach 60, otherwise watch out for the chains doing half price or free eye test offers)
  • Do not buy locally, buy online with your new prescription, at much less than half the cost

+1
I have had to use eyedrops (and varifocals ) for 10+ years... Last eye test suggested I will be blind through cataract around 90 years old....

I've thought about this but how does the inline manufacturer know where to put the changes in lens strength? Everyones face is different and you might end up having to hold your head a odd angles to get the right focus in the right place.

The spectacle frames are adjustable and the local assistant should fit the frames and adjust as needed to cover the points you raise..

The fitting position is crucial if you're going to be able to get on with varifocals. And so is choosing the right type of lens for your needs and your prescription - there are loads of different ones.

There's a lot to be said for trifocals too as Polyhive said.

Online specs are fine if all you need is simple single vision glasses. Anything else is risky.
