I'm installing a nuc into my hive at the weekend. Should I have the mesh floor or solid floor in there to begin with? Wasn't sure if they'd be too cold being so few of them?

Nuc should be on 5 - 8 frames with loads of brood and a couple of frames of food.
Make up empty space left with waxed up frames at each side
OMF is OK, put on solid crown board without any holes or gaps in it... I am seeing a lot of new beekeepers fixing Porter escapes in to crowns... not a good idea as creates a thru draught !

Solid floors... I use for bait hives!

All our hives are OMF, makes the treatment and monitoring of Varroa so much better. Having come backing into bee keeping after a break of over 20 years (varroa had only just starter to get hold here in our part of the UK), OMF we not used, we have found no difference in the bees whilst using an OMF, and to be honest I don't know of any bee keepers now using solid floors. As far as being cold this certainly does not seem to effect the bees.

Hope this helps.
