As for the tax man I am hoping he will give me a substantial refund when I reveal the scale of my losses.

Where are you quoting from?

Try this link to BBKA leaflet LO10 on selling honey, tells you much of what you need to know.

Note that this BBKA leaflet states "For direct sales like farmers markets or sales at the door lot numbers and 'best before' dates are not needed"
For me, selling up to 500 lbs a year 'through the hedge', this gives the best balance. No need to involve jobsworths unless absolutely necessary. After all have we ever heard of food poisoning due to honey?

Yes, that's why there is the recommendation not to give to infants less than 12 months.

I sell at different events and to people who pass my door. Sometimes 500lb a year, last year 110lb. Never registered, but labels produced professionally.
Less you advertise with different agencies less nosy they are.

Heather, where do you get your labels from? As I'm looking to get mine printed elsewhere?

Thank you,

Sean

I note that the guidance as to what constitutes "small amounts" does not mention honey, but suggests:

up to 25tonnes of cockles

or up to 10,000 small wild game

so I think my few lbs of honey are not going to fall foul of the law.

Ta.

Only scrimmed through leaflet. Thought you were quoting from elsewhere.

Seems fairly clear then.

This always concerns me with the increasing litigation culture.

Further support in an email (July, 2013) from the Welsh Government of this BBKA interpretation:

I have discussed your query with a colleague and am now in a position to give you a more full answer to your query. You asked why you appeared to be exempt from being registered as a food business when my advice to you was that you would need to be.

The requirements for food businesses to be registered sits within 853/2004, however there is no specific rules in 853 regarding honey. Guidance produced to sit with 853 (link attached) 3.2. of page 4 indicates that establishments handling honey do not need to be approved.

My local EH dept. would not register me when I asked them as they viewed me as a primary producer and not a packer, even though I told them I was bottling a small proportion myself (about 500 jars/month at the time). The fact I was sending more away in drums was a good enough excuse for them to ignore me. I'm not complaining.
(I'm sure I mentioned this once before but can't find the post)

Of course when I start supplying Tescos in a few years time I may have to bite the bullet!
You'll find that some Tesco distribution centres only accept deliveries from HGV's.:winner1st::winner1st:
