We had to register with the EA. It's pretty straight forward. A quick visit and a few weeks later a 5 rating. According to them, honey is low risk but we had to comply with them.

This information came about after inquiring at a farmers market.

Let it be said that selling over the gate is the easiest option... most of the legislation is then not applicable???????

The Cornwall Trading standards doc seems to be the most up to date on labels.

From my personal experience I would not go with anything produced by local or other beekeepering club or association... probably out of date!

Keep honey production area clean .. smoke and pet free !!!

Thinking of selling a few jars to colleagues at work who are interested.

If I take my garden gate with me.................?

The BBKA has stuff about labelling on their web site.
I don't believe that you have to have tamper evident seals.

If you have a friendly post office you can check-weight a jar there rather than get your own scales calibrated.

I've probably said this before somewhere...
Bromsgrove EH didn't let me register as a food business. They said as a primary producer it wasn't required - clearly different interpretations of the law are possible.

Precisely Chris hence my comment about flexing muscles.

Be aware that if you do that, they may take of-fence...

hi guys,

if i want to sell my honey in a shop that sells sandwiches/food stuffs

what do i legally have to do?

I'd get permission from the shop owner- they might turn a bit funny otherwise.

Don't price to high - they may just bolt :D

Plenty of advice about the labels is already out there. Just about the only thing where the legal requirements are set in stone.

The enviromental health bit is interesting to say the least. I still am waiting to hear back on whether i need to register all not. I've been through quite a bit of the European legislation with regards to the "Primary Producer" bit is. Yes we are the primary producer, way hey we have something clear, BUT the legislation states that we as honey producers only need to register at a certain level of production.

Here comes the gobsmacker. The level is left up to individual member countries. And so far I have not been able to find out what that level is in the UK.

Just a bloody minefield really. My EHO is really interested in knowing about what we do, but has now missed out this year on seeing how we extract etc.

Talk to the shop, they may know better than all us lot on what you need to do for your area.

It's the garden gate. They just asked you to drop it off to them. No charge for the delivery...
