Wool is actually a very undervalued resource; I can remember reading an article a good while ago about how warehouses were "rammed" full of it and the fleeces were worth a pittance.
Just checking and it seems that it's still the case Prices for wool 'have gone through the floor' 215kg of wool and the farmer got £5.22.
Always wondered why it hasn't been more widely used in insulation, a roll of loft insulation is well over £20. I can't imagine it would cost anywhere near that much to clean and package it.
If I had wooden hives I definitely consider using wool for insulation.
I did see a very clever use of wool once though; tree protectors made from wool which degrade after a few years instead of the plastic ones.
