Call that spoiling them Ha, I hand made a four inch cushion out of curtain material with sheredded cardboard to absorb any condensation plus a duvet filling for more insulation. But then it was all the stuff I had available.
Very cold garden almost a foot of snow on top kept the frost out and I did not clear the snow away from the front door, lets in drafts. The Corex went in too.

Unfortunately 67 losses were reported at my local BKA four hive lost at the Botanical Gardens in Sheffield. Mine came through sheltered from the worst of the wind behind some shrubs.:sunning:

Its been tough in Sheffield for the last two winters ... two of my children live in Hunters Bar ... not surprised the bees in the Botanical Gardens suffered ... rain, then snow, then frost, then rain, then snow, then ... well, it was not fun ...

I was going to use a Hessian sack with hay, in a super above the crown board as hay is a much better insulator than straw. Comments/ advice please.

The first important thing is no airholes in the crownboard.
Then warm moist (bee) air can't get into your insulation. This is particularly important if your insulation itself is air-permeable (hessian, hay/straw/wool/fibres).
Do try some high-performance building insulation board. One French brand of Celotex/Kingspan is called XtraTherm. 50 mm thickness of such foil-faced board would be a better insulator than 200mm of hay. (When using straw or hay as building insulation, you need very thick walls indeed.)

Better than nothing, but I'd go with Itma's advice (as I did last year :) )

Reindeer in summer

All of us girls know that Santa's sleigh is pulled by female reindeer, because if you think a fat bloke and a handful of lads, can navigate their way around the world while getting all those deliveries correct, you can think on!
Thanks for the advice
