so if I am short of a national brood box ...

is acceptable to use two supers to act as a brood box ?

will be ordering (and then painting them) some but as a temporary measure that should be fine right (its not like they will be adding comb to the bottom of the frames this time of the year ?

/puts on tin hat/

It doesn't matter what box's you use as long as they have room. They are only that size to make them easy to use!

I know/knew several beekeepers that as they aged found lifting brood chambers too much for them so they switched over to using two supers for the brood nest and carried on keeping bees into their nineties.

I agree with enrico , I've one hive that's three supers the brood was empty so I've removed it and the comb is being made in to candles .
