How do I join 2 colonies without killing Queen

Hi! I just wanted to join 2 colonies, so i found the best queen and put her into a

box then I added a newspaper as a cover then the other colony. They joined ok!

but then I looked into the Queen cage and saw the Queen was dead. why? is it

because I didn't add some bee's with her and candy? any idea's thank you

why did you cage the queen? surely she would have been better running free in the half she came from.
