How accurate is the Beebase apiary count?

This came up in another thread which I won't hijack. So started a new thread.

According to Beebase there are 37 apiaries (not hives) within 10km of my location. I find this difficult to believe given the number of beeks I know of from the local association.

This information I guess is used by bee inspectors when there is an outbreak of disease. Are there any inspectors who have used Beebase to contain an outbreak of Foul Brood for instance? And how up to date is Beebase?

From an amateur beekeepers point of view I'd be happy that there is so much genetic diversity locally for when (hopefully) my virgin queens set out on their mating flights.

When I had AFB, the BI asked me to help identifying apiaries not in list. I knew two.
She advised that Apairies tend to be added to Beebase but rarely removed...

I think MadAsAFish is right. I have old apiaries on BeeBase that I no longer use but can't find a "remove" option so they sit there indefinitely. I think most SBI's rely on their knowledge of the area and goodwill they have build up over the years more than simply relying on the database.

According to Beebase there are 112 within 10Km of mine, really not possible!

Me too, I tried to remove sites no longer used but got nowhere.

It's just a government register of possible sites.

Rather like a driving licence, not everyone with a Driving licence is in a car on the road! I have a licence for several different vehicles but only ever drive one at a time!

Given that it is not mandatory to register on Beebase, some people will not register. If it is impossible to remove an apiary record (it seems that you can change everything about it, including the address, just not remove it) there are probably lots of stale records too.
There is an option to mark the apiary as "not current", which seems like it would be a good way of marking the site unused. In west Norwich, I have 195 apiaries within a 10 km radius, which seems plausible.

how about london then 544 apiaies with 10km and i still get 80-10lb per hive

Any idea about number of hives?

Sadly, no. The only information about other apiaries is the number within 10 km. Presumably, the bee inspectors have access to all the data. not worthy
There are some rudimentary record-keeping features for colony inspections as part of Beebase too, which I make use of in case I lose my notebook. While they cover all the information that I want to include at this stage, if I was doing more advanced breeding, or had many colonies, I would probably want to move to a system where it was easier to move the data around. As far as I can tell, there is no easy way to import or export data from the personal records section.

I see my details from bee inspectors visit have been logged
I think there should be mandatory registration to keep track of pests and diseases

There are a number of beekeepers with persecution complexes and paranoia who would disagree.:paparazzi:

I KNOW the Government are out to get you...

For some reason I can't access the page for my area : (

Really? Why?

Do you belong to a BKA? How many members are there? Mine has 300+ members, most have an apiary, and a fair amount are going to be within 10k of me (that's an area of 314.15 square km if my school maths serves me).

Beebase says there are 113 within 10k of me so that's only one per three square km.
