I've had a small honey crop this year and although I probably won't be selling much of it, I thought it would be an idea to get in the habit of keeping records to track where the honey has gone.

Are there any templates available to record honey extractions, batches and batch numbers, honey sales, etc. Seems a waste to reinvent the wheel if there's already the information out there.

The labels I use have consecutive numbers as lot numbers and I log each batch of jars based on apiary (if only one), year, and water content of batch.

If I sell a bulk load of jars or take some to a fair, I record where they were sold.

That way if I know a batch has gone funny, I will know roughly where it has gone.

Is that recording-keeping done in a notebook, on a preprinted form or on a computer spreadsheet?

We keep a book with details of honey extracted (bucket weights) and then they are jarred up a label gets stuck in to match the jars.

I created my own spread sheet and record super weight before / after extraction (each super is labelled so I know which apiary/hive it comes from) Therefore I can collect information about how much each hive produces. I log bucket numbers / weight / moisture content. Then I log which batches are bottled from each bucket.
I stopped trying to log where each jar is sold (don't have that many outlets) but as each batch is identified with a full best before date (which acts as a batch number) I will be able to identify which jars if any need recalling should I ever have a problem.

Foe example my spreadsheet this year indicates that one single hive (alone in a newish apiary site) has produced approx 27% of my whole yield. Which is surprising when you are looking at a total from 12+ hives. Adding in my 2nd most productive hive brings that yield up to 44.8% !! So basically 2 of my 12 hives produced almost 50% of the total honey extracted.
Ofc some hives were weaker or relatively new this season but still interesting information.

I have three hives that started out in identical hives but one produced 88% of the harvest - strange how one colony can find forage and others not. Maybe the successful colony was foraging in the other two hives!

Have you observed whether wood or poly perform better or don't you have sufficient data from each to form a view?

The data set is still too small at the moment. Poly appears to outperform wood in terms of yield however colonies vary so much in the same material I would like a lot more data before making any statement.
