Yesterday I talked with one colleague grower and we were talking about some agriculture equipment to import from Italy. He said that one acquaintance of him said to be careful, he advised him not to go south of Rome. Cause there is pretty much wild wild west... So, my trust to they maintain under control SHB is pretty low. I really hope but my common sense tell me it ain't happen..
We over here heard earlier there is huge discrepancy between north and south of Italy - like that isn't same country..

That has always been the case, Northern Italy is richer than Southern.

The mafia runs Southern Italy..All sorts of agricultural scams. They don't mind killing a few - or a lot - of consumers. Poisoning is cheaper than shooting.

Good that DEFRA can keep supplying a constant stream of inspectors to inspect goods for other peoples financial gain.
The more and more of this they do will just take them away from their day job of keeping EFB and AFB at manageable levels.
They also have a job on their hands keeping Asian Hornet at bay.
Maybe we need more bee inspectors
Maybe they should be funded by the importers who keep adding to the workload.
Just look at how imports have risen over the last 10 years versus the number of inspectors funded which has remained static.

Often these imports are checked on arrival and 6 weeks later, not so easy when they are sold on.

:iagree:
When I started in the job as a fresh faced officer, Importers, if they wanted prompt customs clearance of their fresh goods, rather than wait in the queue could request the attendance of an officer - which they had to pay for

The controls must be working to some degree as SHB isn't here yet.
If you look at the minute amount of inspections done on imports then if the controls weren't working we would already have it.
Then of course you have the European Queens that arrive without any documentation by post.

2428 packages of bees from Italy imported into the UK from Italy this year.
2428 too many opportunities for the small beetle to arrive.
And who knows how many olive/orange/lemon potted plants.
We do not want any chances for more exotic pests, we have enough already.
Precautionary Principle. Ban all imports.
Only a fool or racketeer would disagree.

Or any with a knowledge of how trade agreements/law works.

The typical stance of spend more money on it and make new rules has never really solved much at all. Its just something politicians/damn liars say to appease the masses. Real change only comes about when individuals make determined choices and changes that are clear to all.

Maybe someone that relies on their living from beekeeping would disagree also.

Just think if shb did arrive you may well see an increase in imports!!! And countries bees are imported from:

I take it you support Brexit as the only way you can unilaterally ban it legally is to leave the EU...

(Not a poltical point .. just a comment)

Better to be sitting around the fire in the teepee and having a voice than standing outside in the cold complaining that you do not have a coat.
Leaving an organisation that we have moderated for four decades or so will not prevent small beetles from getting across our boarders from Southern Italy, the fools and racketeers will simply import it unwittingly from the new world.

But we are not allowed to discuss poltical subjects or fuhrer will delete

I presume the UK agreed with the current measures in italy. If the UK opposed them they would not end up being law. (Uk carries huge weight in animal health in the EU - or used to).

All praise to the moderators. I think we have light touch facilitators moderating this forum. Thank you

:iagree:

and as there is the cupboard under the stairs where political stuff can be discussed, there's very little deletion takes place
