That's roughly the effect when things go wrong while SCUBA diving. Last time it happened to me I kept waking up with a salty, soggy pillow for a week.Would it perhaps be more effective to fit some kind of bung in each nostril, with a hole in the center for inserting a syringe, then force 40 or 50ml of salt water solution up each nostril, until it ran/gurgled out of the persons mouth,at least this would be a guaranteed method of flushing.
Thanks A N B, the 40/50ml was just a guess, so what your saying is maybe pumping a litre or so of salty water up each nostril, would be much more effective. You need considerably more than 50ml. It's surprising how much sinuses can hold.
That would probably be roughly equivalent to doing a 'giant stride' off the top deck of a large live-aboard, and losing your mask on entry to the water. Vicious but effective (shown me by a foreign student many years ago) - turn on an electric cooker ring - you want it hot but not glowing - then pour half a teaspoon of sugar on it - stick your head in the dense white fumes and sniff hard......... (If it catches fire, the ring is too hot). It smells vile, and feels as if you've inhaled poison gas, but it is very effective........
