well done and congratulations on you award
Geoffrey Hopkinson, 84, from Walton-on-the-Hill, will receive the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to beekeeping and environmental education. from http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-18457671
Why does he get an OBE for following a hobby
He must have done something - these are not handed oout like confetti = WELL DONE!!
I'm beginning to think you're a troll. These awards are not handed out like sweeties - I suggest you do some background reading and ask a few questions of those who know him before firing your mouth off; that way you'd realise he's done an awful lot more than "following a hobby".
I expect there will be some mention of Geoff's contributions in forthcoming issues of the beekeeping magazines. I have seen the information that was compiled to support the award proposal and know the level and breadth of support that this had from the UK beekeeping fraternity.
Why does he get an OBE for following a hobby - not just him but people doing their job get them too - odd?
Congratulations on Geoff's OBE I am sure it was a happy day for him.
That being said, the world would be a happier place if people just did things for the sake and reward of doing them. I am not a monarchist and would not take an award if one was offered as I think there would be many more deserving people working quietly in their own corner of the world, largely unrecognised for what they do and probably doing more than I am doing.
We are a democracy. I didn't vote for the monarchy or future monarchs. However, this isn't a political forum and I wish Geoff all the best and thank him for what he has contributed to the 'hobby' as a beekeeper. Ciao!
