Why does he get an OBE for following a hobby - not just him but people doing their job get them too - odd?

i stand corrected under the queens list as
of order of the British empire medal and British empire medal

Yes congratulations. It is gratifying that our hobby is recognised.

I'm beginning to think you're a troll. These awards are not handed out like sweeties - I suggest you do some background reading and ask a few questions of those who know him before firing your mouth off; that way you'd realise he's done an awful lot more than "following a hobby".

I expect there will be some mention of Geoff's contributions in forthcoming issues of the beekeeping magazines. I have seen the information that was compiled to support the award proposal and know the level and breadth of support that this had from the UK beekeeping fraternity.

He's a really nice guy. He comes to our meetings.

Well done Geoff

He must have done something - these are not handed oout like confetti = WELL DONE!!

:iagree: my mate has one for getting McDonalds to feed starving children in Romania, he did not know he was getting one until the letter arrived about a year later, I ask my self sometimes the world would be a better place with good hearts and not sour one's

As I know two OBE holders very well and both said they didn't really know what they had done to deserve them, apart from "just doing their jobs or hobbies"

It's a far more worthy way of getting an honour than bunging a political party a load of dosh and getting an honour in return. Bung them enough and you'll get a lordship.

Congratulations on Geoff's OBE I am sure it was a happy day for him.

That being said, the world would be a happier place if people just did things for the sake and reward of doing them. I am not a monarchist and would not take an award if one was offered as I think there would be many more deserving people working quietly in their own corner of the world, largely unrecognised for what they do and probably doing more than I am doing.

We are a democracy. I didn't vote for the monarchy or future monarchs. However, this isn't a political forum and I wish Geoff all the best and thank him for what he has contributed to the 'hobby' as a beekeeper. Ciao!

I have known Geoff Hopkinson NDB for over 20 years. He has done a tremendous amount for beekeepers and UK beekeeping as a BBKA examiner, lecturer/instructor and also for the work he does for the NDB board. Those, like myself who have had contact with him are grateful for the help and advice he has so freely given us. He is one of the most knowledgeable, skilled UK beekeepers still alive and is very patient and encouraging to those who have just started. He well deserves this belated recognition of his contribution to beekeepers.

Why can't you just be happy for him?

Now, now, DanBee. Far too many of the 'honours' are handed out like sweeties to those who do not deserve them – civil servants, politicians, 'celebrities'.

That doesn't mean to say this guy hasn't deserved this award, but it is a fair question. How many on here do you think understand the procedure for proffering such a gong?

Hi my name is Mark McKay and I am a reporter for The Sheffield Star newspaper.

Google is your friend. His home town/village has a population of less than 2000. How difficult can it be to find him?

That's helpful Another bee, I expect he hasn't thought about using Google only being a reporter and that.

Perhaps he was hoping for someone to say he knows him - like he asked so he could get some inside info ..... and a good story on the old chap.

Where is the forum spirit.

I got his home town/village in less than 10 seconds via Google. A little more effort (or even just a letter sent to Geoffrey Hopkinson, {insert home town}) will get results.

I'm not a big fan of reporters (you may have noticed). Especially those who hope for others to do their work for them.

Besides, as he's a reporter how do you/we/I know he's not hoping to dig some dirt?
