Those bloody bees are costing me more than the family! At this rate we will all get fed on bread and water!

It's alright as eventually you will spend so much time and money on your bees that your significant other will decide they have had enough of your all consuming hobby and will either learn to feed the family on next to nothing except the promise of a honey harvest at some point in the future and will completely ignor you or will push off and leave you to it taking the family and any pets with them ... when you can then do what you like.

If you are thinking that having bees will save you money as you won't have to buy honey - in my first few seasons I could have had best manuka delivered by hand in a taxi from Fortnum and Masons in Piccadilly for less than the cost of my few jars of honey ...

Someone has given me a Bees Abroad charity's sticker, with the legend "Relieving Poverty through Beekeeping".
Hm.
Charity may begin at home, as the saying goes, but I can only say relieving poverty through beekeeping most certainly hasn't begun in this home yet. Rather the opposite...

For the moment I am getting away with this a lot easier than the evenings down the pub with the boys...obviously I haven't told her about my planned increase for this season!!

Thornes were selling a new line in vaporisers at the Convention yesterday.

£25.00.

Dusty

Good grief!

It's a vaporiser!

If it works, who cares?

Dusty

:iagree: The price tag on Varrox is due to their monopoly on the market. Its good to have competition. If a £25 one is on the market it must have been trialed, tested and safe.

Trialled tested and safe yes, but after Dusty told me I went for a look this morning and was going to post about it tonight - there is a world of difference between the varrox and the Thornes one (and indeed the one the Irish stall that was selling at £115.00) I think it will be fine for the 'backyard beekeeper' with a few hives but it is not near robust enough for continued use on a lot of hives, the cabling is not as strong and the crocodile clips IMHO won't last long. Well made but you can feel as soon as you pick it up that it won't take a hammering. but for £25.00 it's a much better investment than faffing around with a bodged up travel water heater as some of the 'experts' advise or a piece of copper pipe and a blowlamp however well put together.
It's an 'entry level' bit of kit, won't break the bank and not prohibitive for those who are not sure whether to switch but would like to give it a try.

Yeh that ... at £25 it's less than a season's treatment for most other strip type treatments - it's a real no brainer. Will they continue the convention promotion ?

I meant to ask but I was distracted by a young lady who was definitely not dressed for this cold weather and forgot
It wasn't marked as a show special though

I use one of these, seems pretty robust so far. Much cheaper than a varrox, but not as cheap as some of the others on eBay that are listed now.

Thanks JWF, The P&P is the stinger on those from Germany! If its anything like their cars must be robust.....but perhaps dodgy on the emissions?

Definitely well built but does chuck some fumes out!

Has anyone tried or heard anything about those vaporisers from Ukraine you can et on ebay for under £50 offering a 12 months guaranty?

Bought one... used once... leads and switch burst into flames.. attempted to get a "guaranteed refund" via fleabuy... I even contacted Trading Standards ( Well the CAB sham they send you to as TS only deals with businesses) but was told that the seller was outside of the UK and did not come under UK selling Laws or jurisdiction!

let the buyer beware indeed
