Common Figwort Scrophularia nodosa is a common plant that bees frequent on a regular basis.
If you have any questions on flora and pollen please ask away.

Mo no bees.

Hi Mo,

Where is this plant usually found and what colour is the pollen?

Thanks

This plant is normally found in and around allotments and also on heaths where there is dryish ground, some beekeepers grow this plant and it can be used for medicinal purposes. Pollen colour is yellow as in the photo's.

It's classed as a weed isn't it? A lot of wildflowers are classed as weeds. I used to be quite into wildflowers and their medicinal properties, and how they were used in the past. That was before the children lol, now I'm lucky if I get time to wash my hair :D

I have been educated by my keen gardening neighbour that apparently a weed is simply any plant that grows where it's not wanted - which seems reasonable.

Hi Kazmcc
Yes i know exactly how you feel dearie not washing your hair OH my God whatever next?

In all honesty i know you find time for your bees ggod girl.
A lot of flowers and "weeds" are used in medicne and some of the old remidies are or were true to form.

LOL. I will always make time for the bees :D

Luckily I run inspections during school hours now, which is a lot less stressful for me, without the kids yelling the whole time.

I used to have a lot of interests. Astronomy was a big one, which took a back seat once the kids came. I'm alone with them so don't get much free time.

I do love wildflowers though. Things like wormwood, yarrow, vetch, the things people blast out of their gardens. I just find it fascinating how they were used, I used to make calendula face creams and things like that for me and my friends. Maybe something to pick up again once the boys are older and more able to do things for themselves.

I do enjoy your picture Bcrazy. Thank you for taking the time to post them :)

I :)

We should all leave some room for these, I think.
Last year, in our field there were thousands of common knapweed and the odd foxglove. This year there are thousands of foxgloves and few knapweed. I know they are biannual but you'd think that half would come one year and half the next. I think it actually shows that most of the plants came from a common source?
I love the way a bumble vibrates a flower...........wonderful sound.

I visited friends recently in Witherslack, which is in your neck of the woods isn't it? We went for a walk ont he common behind their house and I was surprised at how many foxgloves were growing in the wild. There was a lot of moss too. Beautiful :)
