I added fondant today on top of the frames, hope everything will be ok. Weather forecast is for another week of this shite. This is my first year and I was delighted a few weeks ago to see my girls flying and bringing in pollen - the weather here in southern Ireland has not been as bad as elsewhere but according to the forecast they won't be able to collect for the next week at least. I don't want to open the hive for too long to see what stores they have. I am now just throwing food on top without any real knowledge of what is going on below- is this normal practice? obviously there is a trade off between allowing cold into the hive and finding out if they are starving but how do experienced beeks call this. Are there any signs I can watch for?

As long as the are taking it I would carry on. Excess food won't kill them but no food will!
If they are just storing it you can always remove it later.
