Full marks to Th***** for service.

Emailed them yesterday to say I had a potentially faulty QE. Email recieved tonight to say replacement will be sent to me in next few days.

If they are faulty, they do not need to be returned.

well we replaced 80 or so QE with these orange ones and so far the results have been disasterous.

...
Potentially more disasterous .. I used two with Baily Comb changes -- opened up after 7 days to see hardly any comb drawn and a slimmed down queen stomping about not looking happy.

Thank god I didnt leave it a further 7 days

so far lost 2 swarms and approx 40 supers of honey as a consequence of .1mm (some of the oranges are 4.1mm and some are 4.2mm). since we replaced every 3rd colony over 20 sites its been a real nightmare driving around taking these dam excluders off and replacing. completely messed up the 10 day inspection and lost a whole load of bees/brood.

It seems not all colonies are affected but the ones that are - perhaps due to different bee sizes - completely supress the hives expansion and as a result hardly any workers store any nector above the QE.

For example a similarly sized hive (3/4 brood) next to each other, 1 with metal QE approx 45 pounds full, 1 with orange QE, 0 pounds full.

Not only is it the loss of honey, the lack of space means the brood area is restricted and the colony throws up queen cells all over the place and the brood box is rammed full. no doubt these colonies (some of which produced well over 300 pounds last year) have been severely throttled back.

been frantically running all over the place today to replace these shoddy QEs and knock out the queen cells. done about 5 of 20 sites now...

Maybe a case for an ambulance chasing lawyer!;)

Lucky you - no response from phone message or email left yesterday as yet. However I only had one, hard luck on others who bought and used multiples.

Just discovered (lucliky in the shed and not on the hive) that I've one of these faulty queen excluders and Thornes are going to replace FOC.

Here's a thought/question. Shame to throw it out so.... would the faulty excluder be any use as a varroa floor or a well ventilated crown board?
