In a previous life, I worked for the Open University.... and even in those black and white days it took two days studio time to record a 25 minute program! I'm even in one of them!

you remember I out bid you on a stainless settling tank a while ago then spoke to you at a bee auction the last time I saw you lol

Did they give you a new suit top to film in then lol
bit far for me to go to the convention.

Never seen last years OSR honey looking like that.

Peter

There's television, reality and "reality television". Those three things are different; don't confuse them!
As confessed upthread (and in the other thread), it was heated specially to remelt it (to have runny honey for the brief while of filming).

BeeCrazy,

You made us all smile in my house, especially the moment where the experienced old beekeeper takes a hit off in the distance. We fell about when you said that through jeans It wasn't so bad. My daughter was disagreeing with you a lot.

Well done for representing our hobby on tv and we look forward to your the next adventure.

All the best,
Sam

Did try and catch it on the iplayer but it wasn't available last night :(

I'll have to watch this, just got this email from the allotment manager where I'm about to put my very first hive:

"unfortunately I’ve had a couple of our residents approach me this morning as apparently there was a feature on beekeeping on Country File last night which slightly alarmed them."

:(

Good little item, well done, came across very well.

One thing confused me (doesn't take much) - I was under the impression that bees weren't needed/didn't add to OSR pollination because it was normally done by wind? Have I got that all wrong?

Very interesting.

There was a comment from one of the farmers at the open day on Saturday. They're now starting to suspect that the amount of oil extracted from OSR is greater if less of the crop is pollinated (so less flowers on each plant. more energy put into what flowers/seeds there are, and bigger seeds). Apparently.

As for double-dipping, shame on him. Did he really do that, or did the way it was edited just make it look as though he did? There seems to be a skip between the first and second dips.

I don't claim to know a thing about Oil seed rape pollination but a couple of thoughts.

Firstly plants pollinated by wind generally have the stamens and stigma exposed and not covered by petals.

Second why would a plant evolve petals with colour is it was wind pollinated.

As I understand it they self pollinate (ovules fertilised by pollen from the same plant/flower) but insect pollination adds a percentage (I think between 10 & 15) on to the yield.

I am sure somebody will correct me.
