Dead queen?

The clue is in the single pair of wings, the large eyes that cover almost its entire head and the lack of a waist .. compare it with a picture of a queen bee and it becomes obvious.

Except the picture shows two pairs of wings and a waist. Admittedly, the eyes don't look quite right and there are no antennae.

Which means it is more likely to be a drone. Lots of hair on the thorax (I've never come across newly emerged queens with that much hair on the thorax), eyes of a drone not a queen. Admittedly you cannot see antennae nor legs. Hair removed from abdomen. If it was a queen, then the abdomen is more worker like than a queen. Larva more than 2 days old drawn out to be a queen with more worker characteristics.

Eristalis pertinax, as Pargyle's link. Once a flying insect has been in a hive the bees nibble the hairs and when it escapes it looks quite different.

This large insect spent 24 hours in a nuc and the bees gave it the once-over. What is it?
