Hi guys,

I bought a couple of hives from a guy that went for next to nothing. Anyway, hives are full to the full to the brim with bees.

Problem is, this guy was told that during this bad weather, he must FEED FEED FEED and trust me, he sure has done that to the point where he has 2 supers on each full of 'honey'. As they are on brood and a half, these frames are also jam packed too giving the queen almost no where to lay apart from the odd few patches.

can anyone advise how i get the bees to move this 'honey' from the brood frames? the majourity in the brood frames have not been capped and its still very much syrup like rather than honey consistency

I would put a brood box of frames with foundation on top of the brood and a half. Then clear the supers of bees, remove and store the supers.

The colony still has the same amount of space but now has a full brood box of foundation to draw, it should use the stored syrup to do this thus opening up more space for the queen to lay in.

Once you have the stores reduced to a "normal" level - 2 full frames +an arch over the brood - You could clear and remove the drawn brood box (drawn comb is always useful) and replace with empty supers, you are then back to a standard configuration - good luck:)

Remove some of the brood frames that are bunged - 2 or 3 say - with stores, keep them for later use come autumn, and put in new undrawn frames for them to work on.

I'm assuming you'd store the supers to add under for winter. word of experience- if you're storing frames with anything, in, be VERY sure they are in beeproof storage.

and the supers would be empty of sugar syrup honey
Oh you can extract from brood frames as well which as you well know vm would free up room in the brood boxes:rolleyes:

How many frames of brood are there?

PH

I would ask the same. But there are surely frames which are mere food. Take them off and give foundations instead. When bees start to draw foundations, they consume quite much sugar.
Dont put new box overthenuc. It will not stand loss of heat.

Nuc means a small colony. It needs such a room what it occupye and keep warm.

So how many frames and how many frames have brood.

If you have mere food frames, you may wash with warm water syrup away. You loose 2 pounds as sugar price. It is not much.

sorry about the late reply PH, just a bit hectic at the minute

I bought these hives off a guy, He had put them on brood and a half. God knows why as the amount of brood in these frames doesnt justify it and HM seems to be laying in patches where ever she want. I guess if you add them all up. Theres no more than 6 frames of brood present.

ive now put the QX inbetween the brood box and the half to find out where HM is as i couldnt find her. Once ive founde her. I will be putting her in a single brood box. with QX ontop. The hive is packed full of bees.

Ive not got any spare drawn out foundation for brood box so hence why I wanted to know how to get the bees to move it

any advice appreciated
