And what about all those that are NOT patented (like, it would seem, the Tickner Edwardes)?!
 
Looks like one of my ancestors patented self spacing frames in 1893, well before Hofmann in 1917.

Wonder if I'm due any money?

Of course, perusal shows that this is a list of US patents only, although it includes some overseas (European applicants). Not being familiar with Patent law, I'm not sure how, say British patents figure alongside American ones.

However, it's interesting to look at Lamgstroths early patents and also other designs for removable frame hives patented alongside his around the same time. It would be interesting to find out whether they were drawing on Dzierzon's published and translated work like Langstroth or copying Langstroths' designs.
