update...
finally managed to find space to get mine home (had several batches on winter tyres to take on plane with me before xmas!!!!).
used it to sterilise some bottles - checked settings on way up - 60C and 80C were within 1 degree of the thermometer i used so looks like mine at least wasn't a friday afternoon item.
It should be noted that even lab spec waterbaths always end up being "calibrated" in house and positions for true 37C and 65C written on the dials!!!
so for me at least, a bargain straight out of the box!
