So .... to clarify for my education ... you are not hunting swarms ... what you are finding is a feral colony living in a tree ... so what do you do then ? Cut them out ?

My understanding of swarms is that they are not out looking for food - they are just looking for a new home and are stuffed with honey which they took with them for the journey. The only bees out flying from a swarm are scouts usually looking for new premises ... not foragers looking for honey.

I don't understand ... anyone else able to enlighten me ?
Not if they have combed inside TREE

Not if they have combed inside TREE

So .. these bees you caught had built comb on the outside of a tree ? Whilst that is possible it's pretty unusual in the UK .. So, having found your colony how did you go about capturing them ... I would think they would have been pretty upset at this time of the year to have their home disturbed. What did you do to get them into a hive and get them home ?

Really interested ...

if feral colonies are happily doing their thing, miles from anyone to disturb, why interfere?

by all means make a note and perhaps set up local baitboxes in the spring but leave the bees alone.

impossible

JBM ... we've been here before earlier in the year ... help me out, my memory is not what it was ... the bloke who was going to have 500 Warre hives in Essex by the end of the season ... I can't remember his handle ...

Is this thread going the same way ?

What really scares me is that plate of honey ! Where is the honey from ?????

Local beekeepers might want to request a visit from the bee inspector !!!

Fair enough - rescuing feral colonies from destruction is fair game. otherwise leave them to it and try to catch swarms.
