Starter for ten from OP..."How much do I need to know about them".
I doubt knowing simply the name of a disease will be beneficial. Bit more needed me thinks....

Fortunately one does not need to know about morphometrical calculations... but if I was examining our salmonid bee friend I would make hime explain the attached diagram!

- 6 to 8 Langstroth jumbos, a few Langstroth and National nucs.
It's wrong: A lang jumbo only takes 10 brood frames.
