Having being stung by an Asian hornet this morning my tactics may have changed, 7 hours on and my finger is still throbbing and it wasnt even a full sting. I may be getting slightly complacent with whacking the hornet with my bare hand and stamping on it, today one held on. My advice is if you do see one, report it first.

We have had them for around 2 weeks, not as bad as last year, yet.

Is there any direct competition for prey or best sites between native hornets and V. velutina?

If so, indiscriminate trapping may, ironically, help V. velutina become established more easily, if it also depletes native hornet numbers.

Yes and competition between VV from different nests. I actually witnessed a VC carrying off a VV a few years ago.
